The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a government screening programme offered during the primary school years.
The screening is undertaken by the Child Development Team. The Child Development Team are part of the health visiting team and it comprises of community staff nurses, nursery nurses and support workers.
NCMP is a government programme to measure the height and weight of children in Reception class (aged 4 to 5) and year 6 (aged 10 to 11). The programme is intended to assess overweight and obesity levels in children. This information allows the government to plan health education and services. It also enables us to refer families onto other services if indicated.
In addition, as part of the statutory service, all children in Reception year will have the opportunity for their hearing and vision to be checked. From these checks your child may be referred onto specialist services if necessary ~ audiology and/or ophthalmology.
You will also receive a short health questionnaire to complete and return to the school.
NCMP is offered to all children within state maintained primary schools.
Hearing and vision screening is offered to all children in Reception year.
You do not need to do anything. Your school will send you all the information you need before the team is due to visit the school to conduct the screening.
Parents or carers can choose to withdraw their child from any aspect of the process by responding to the letter sent informing them of the screening date.
