Temporary closure of Darland House 

We have taken the difficult decision to temporarily close Darland House in Gillingham following concerns about the safety of the service. 

Darland House is a 40-bed specialist continuing healthcare nursing home providing residential care for adults with complex dementia and mental health needs. The safety and wellbeing of residents is our absolute priority. Following careful consideration, admissions to the home have been paused while a full review is completed. 

As part of this process, MCH has made a safeguarding referral and notified the Care Quality Commission (CQC). 

A number of improvement measures were introduced earlier this year following a temporary pause in admissions. While progress has been made, concerns about the service’s ability to consistently meet the standards of care patients deserve have led to the decision to take further action. 

Our immediate focus is supporting patients, their families and carers. We are working closely with health and care partners to identify suitable alternative placements and ensure every patient receives safe, appropriate and compassionate care. Additional leadership and clinical support has been put in place to support the team during this transition. 

We recognise that moving people living with dementia can be unsettling and challenging, and this is not a decision we have taken lightly. However, where there are concerns about safety, we have a responsibility to act. 

While every effort will be made to find placements close to family and friends, the availability of suitable accommodation means this will not always be possible. We will work closely with patients and families throughout this process and keep them updated on plans.
