Chronic pain is pain that has been present for more than 3 months; it can be constant or it can come and go.

Chronic pain can have many causes and affects many people.

Fibromyalgia is a long term condition that causes pain all over the body and is often associated with other symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches and difficulty sleeping; its cause is unknown.

Physiotherapy can be effective in managing chronic pain and fibromyalgia as physiotherapists can give advice which is based on up to date guidelines e.g. National Institute for Clinical Excellence.

Following a physiotherapy assessment, your physiotherapist can offer advice on managing chronic pain and fibromyalgia by:

  • a specific, individualised excercise programme
  • relaxation advice
  • pacing, planning and prioritization advice and use of pacing diaries.

Your physiotherapist can advise on an exercise programme that is specific to you e.g. strengthening a particular muscle group.

S/he can also advise on generel exercises and activity that can be of benefit in chronic pain.
