Making a difference

What we do

The physiotherapy team at the Wisdom Hospice provide expert assessment and treatment for patients who have a palliative diagnosis and symptoms related to this diagnosis. The diagnosis may be:
  • Cancer
  • Advanced neurological conditions such as motor neurone disease (MND), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) or multiple systems atrophy (MSA)
  • Advanced respiratory disease
  • Advanced cardiac disease
  • Other advanced, life limiting illnesses
The common symptoms and issues that we help to assess and treat as part of a multidisciplinary approach are:
  • Neurological impairments
  • Muscle weakness, deconditioning and steroid induced proximal myopathy
  • Loss of function and mobility
  • Pain
  • Breathlessness
  • Sputum retention and weak cough
Treatments and management options may include:
  • Exercise therapy – including muscle strengthening, stretching and conditioning
  • Provision of walking aids and equipment
  • Advice on moving and handling
  • Provision of orthoses
  • Functional rehabilitation
  • Breathlessness and fatigue management techniques
  • Chest clearance techniques
  • Pain management – including TENS, acupuncture, positioning and stretches
  • Referral into our Fatigue and Breathlessness (FAB) Group and our Living Well Circuit Group
