Frequently asked questions

  • Do I have to pay for services?

All services are provided free of charge.

  • If I am referred to the hospice, does this mean I am going to die very soon?

Patients are seen by the specialist palliative care service at varying times of their disease process. Treatment may take place over a period of a few days to anything over a year.

  • I thought the hospice was only for cancer patients?

The majority of patients seen by the service have advanced cancer but we have many patients with neurological diseases such as motor neurone disease, those with advanced HIV disease and people with advancing respiratory, cardiac and renal disease.

  • I haven't any pain.  Can I still be seen by the service?

Yes.  The staff are specialists in the control of pain and many other symptoms experienced by patients.  However, the care provided is given to the patient with support, counseling and advice to family members as part of the philosophy of care.
