Walk this May
Post date: 29 Apr 2016

Hi, Luke here. I'm one of the physiotherapists at Medway Community Healthcare.

Did you know that May is National Walking Month? This is promoting a healthier lifestyle and showing that exercise does not have to be running around a sports field or being in the gym. Walking

The national average people should be achieving is 10,000 steps a day. This sounds like a high number but it is easily achievable by using some of these examples:

  • walk part of your journey to work
  • walk to the shops
  • use the stairs instead of the lift
  • leave the car behind for short journeys
  • walk the kids to school
  • a regular walk with a friend
  • go for a stroll with family or friends after dinner.

Walking has many benefits for the body and it is an easy way to exercise, it can be made fun and it may:

  • maintain a healthy weight
  • prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes
  • strengthen your bones and muscles
  • improve your mood
  • improve your balance and coordination.

If you have any concerns regarding pains that you may feel during walking or exercise, visit your GP who will be able to refer you for a physiotherapy assessment with MCH, who are located at many sites across Medway.
