ourZone opens after £1.2million refurbishment

On 22 November, Medway Community Healthcare (MCH) celebrated the official reopening of ourZone on Pattens Lane, Rochester.

Team GB paraclimber Josh Senior came along to welcome the members and cut the ribbon along with the Mayor and Mayoress of Medway, Councillor David and Mrs Denise Wildey.

After cutting the ribbon, Josh said "Having been through two rehab experiences, I really believe two of the biggest issues people face as they go through trauma or disability are a perceived lack of independence and a lack of community.  It’s great to see ourZone opening and being a place that can be a real game changer for both of those issues.”

ourZone is a day centre providing activities for those with physical or long term health conditions. In addition, the newly refurbished centre will be home to several community health clinics. Members can enjoy meeting new people, getting involved with a wide range of activities and experiences and learn new skills, all with the support of a specialist team. The centre also has specially adapted vehicles which can provide members with transport to and from their home.

The refurbishment has not only seen an improvement to the building overall, but the addition of extra facilities including a new gym, hairdressing salon, sensory room, hobby kitchen and showering facilities. These all received a positive response from the current members including Daisy.

Daisy, 22, who has been a member at ourZone for the past 3 years, said "The new building is great, so much better than the old building we had before. I love coming here because there is always something different to do.”

ourZone is open to anybody over the age of 18 and its facilities can be utilised by both members and non-members. Certain rooms such as the sensory room and showering facilities can be booked in advance and used as a one-off or on a more regular basis.
